Love this, Nicolás.

It does strike me that a certain set of people did want to be broke. The saints.

Nicholas, nowhere do I propose that our "imagination reveals our desires." Those are your words, not mine—and a caricature of what I am proposing. The imagination can just as easily be dominated by demonic or pornographic things completely given to it by the prevailing culture. If what you're referring to is my writing about the imagination in my book Wanting, then one of the specific things I had in mind there (and drew on) were the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, which are the opposite of what you are claiming. If you'd like to seriously engage these issues, I'll seriously with you back—but this newsletter demonstrates a superficial reading.

"The more we feign genuineness, the more we suppress or exaggerate portions of ourselves."

Ahh. Still thinking about all of this.

Wonderful essay, Nicolás!
